Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
